How to autohide the panel on your Chromebook

Today we're looking at how to autohide the panel (shelf) on your Chromebook, giving you more screen real estate and a cleaner workspace. This feature is particularly useful when you're working with limited screen space or want to minimize distractions during focused work sessions.

The Chromebook's shelf, which typically sits at the bottom of your screen, contains your app launcher, pinned applications, and system tray. While it's convenient to have quick access to these items, autohiding the shelf can maximize your viewing area, especially when working with documents, watching videos, or running multiple windows side by side.

Follow along with our step-by-step video guide below, where we demonstrate the entire process in real-time:

How to Enable Autohide on Your Chromebook Shelf

Enabling the autohide feature on your Chromebook is straightforward and requires just a few clicks. Here's what you need to do:

  1. Right-click on an empty area of the shelf (the bar at the bottom of your screen)
  2. From the context menu that appears, select "Autohide shelf"
  3. The shelf will immediately hide itself from view

Once enabled, your shelf will automatically slide out of view when you're not using it. To access your apps and system controls, simply move your mouse cursor to the bottom edge of the screen, and the shelf will reappear. When you move your cursor away, it will hide again.

Benefits of Using Autohide

There are several advantages to enabling the autohide feature on your Chromebook:

  • Increased screen space: You'll gain additional vertical pixels, which is especially valuable on smaller Chromebook displays
  • Reduced visual clutter: A cleaner workspace can help you focus better on your current task
  • Better for presentations: When sharing your screen or giving presentations, the hidden shelf provides a more professional appearance
  • Improved immersion: When watching videos or viewing photos, the autohide feature creates a more immersive experience

Disabling Autohide

If you decide you prefer having the shelf visible at all times, you can easily reverse this setting. Simply move your cursor to the bottom of the screen to reveal the shelf, right-click on an empty area, and uncheck "Autohide shelf." The shelf will remain visible permanently until you choose to hide it again.

Additional Tips

Keep in mind that the autohide setting is persistent across reboots, so you won't need to reconfigure it each time you start your Chromebook. The feature works seamlessly with both Chrome OS's desktop mode and when using Linux applications through the Linux development environment.

If you're using an external monitor with your Chromebook, the autohide setting can be configured independently for each display, giving you flexibility in how you organize your workspace across multiple screens.
