How to hide notifications on a Chromebook

In this guide, we'll show you how to hide notifications on your Chromebook. Notifications can be helpful for staying updated, but they can also become distracting when you're trying to focus on work, watching videos, or presenting your screen to others. Chrome OS provides several built-in options to manage and customize your notification settings, giving you full control over which apps can interrupt you and when.

Whether you want to temporarily silence all notifications during an important meeting or permanently disable alerts from specific apps, this tutorial will walk you through all the available options.

Follow along with our step-by-step video guide below, where we demonstrate each process visually:

Understanding Chromebook Notifications

Chrome OS notifications appear in the bottom-right corner of your screen by default. These can come from various sources including Chrome browser tabs, Android apps (if your Chromebook supports them), system updates, and Chrome extensions. While notifications are designed to keep you informed, managing them effectively is key to maintaining productivity and reducing digital clutter.

The good news is that Chrome OS offers granular control over notifications, allowing you to customize settings on an app-by-app basis or use the "Do Not Disturb" mode for quick, temporary silence.

How to Access Notification Settings

To begin managing your notifications, you'll need to access the notification settings panel:

  1. Click on the system tray in the bottom-right corner of your screen (where the time and battery icon are displayed)
  2. Click on the gear icon to open Settings
  3. In the Settings menu, scroll down and look for the "Privacy and security" section
  4. Click on "Notifications" or "Site Settings" and then select "Notifications"

From here, you'll see a list of all apps and websites that have requested permission to send you notifications, along with toggles to enable or disable them individually.

Using Do Not Disturb Mode

If you need a quick way to silence all notifications temporarily, Do Not Disturb mode is your best friend:

  1. Click on the system tray in the bottom-right corner
  2. Look for the notification bell icon
  3. Click on it to toggle Do Not Disturb mode on or off

When Do Not Disturb is active, all notification pop-ups will be suppressed, though notifications will still be collected in your notification center for you to review later. This is particularly useful during presentations, video calls, or focused work sessions.

Managing Individual App Notifications

For more permanent solutions, you can control which specific apps are allowed to send notifications:

  1. Navigate to Settings > Privacy and security > Notifications
  2. Scroll through the list of apps and websites
  3. Toggle off notifications for any app you don't want to hear from
  4. You can also click on individual apps to access more detailed notification settings

This approach is ideal when you want to keep notifications from important apps while blocking less critical ones. For example, you might want to receive notifications from your email client and calendar but disable them from social media apps or news websites.

Blocking Website Notifications

Many websites request permission to send you notifications. If you've accidentally allowed notifications from sites you don't want to hear from, you can revoke those permissions:

  1. Go to Settings > Privacy and security > Site Settings > Notifications
  2. Under the "Allowed" section, you'll see all websites with notification permissions
  3. Click the three-dot menu next to any website and select "Block" or "Remove"

You can also configure Chrome to prevent websites from requesting notification permissions in the first place by selecting the option to block sites from asking to send notifications.

Additional Tips

Here are a few additional tips to help you maintain a distraction-free Chromebook experience:

  • Review regularly: Periodically check your notification settings to ensure you're only receiving alerts that matter to you
  • Prioritize critical apps: Keep notifications enabled for essential productivity apps while disabling them for entertainment or social apps during work hours
  • Use scheduled Do Not Disturb: Some Chrome OS versions support scheduling Do Not Disturb mode for specific times, such as during your typical work hours or sleep schedule
  • Clear notification backlog: Remember to check your notification center periodically when using Do Not Disturb mode to ensure you haven't missed anything important
