How to hide notifications on a Chromebook

In this guide, we'll walk you through the process of managing and hiding notifications on your Chromebook. Chrome OS notifications can be incredibly useful for staying updated on important events, messages, and system alerts, but they can also become distracting when you're trying to focus on work or simply want a cleaner, less cluttered experience.

Whether you're looking to temporarily silence notifications during a presentation, minimize distractions while studying, or permanently disable notifications from specific apps, this tutorial will show you exactly how to take control of your notification settings.

Follow along with our step-by-step video guide below, where we demonstrate the entire process visually:

Understanding Chromebook Notifications

Chrome OS uses a notification center located in the bottom-right corner of your screen (in the system tray area). Notifications appear as pop-up banners and are also stored in this notification center for later review. These notifications can come from various sources including:

  • Chrome browser extensions and web apps
  • Android apps installed from the Google Play Store
  • System notifications (updates, battery alerts, connectivity issues)
  • Linux applications (if you have Linux enabled on your Chromebook)

Managing Your Notification Settings

Chrome OS provides granular control over which apps and services can send you notifications. You can disable notifications entirely, silence them temporarily using Do Not Disturb mode, or customize settings on a per-app basis. This flexibility ensures you only receive the notifications that matter most to you.

To access your notification settings, click on the clock in the bottom-right corner of your screen, then click the gear icon to open Settings. From there, navigate to the "Apps" section and then "Notifications" to see a complete list of all apps with notification permissions. Here you can toggle notifications on or off for individual apps, giving you precise control over your notification experience.

Using Do Not Disturb Mode

One of the quickest ways to hide all notifications temporarily is by enabling Do Not Disturb mode. This feature is perfect for presentations, video calls, or any time you need to minimize distractions without permanently changing your notification settings. Simply click on the system tray in the bottom-right corner and toggle the Do Not Disturb option. When enabled, notifications will still arrive but won't display pop-up banners or make sounds—they'll simply collect in your notification center for you to review later.
