How to remove applications on the shelf of the Chromebook

Managing your Chromebook's shelf efficiently can significantly improve your workflow and keep your workspace organized. In this guide, we'll walk you through the simple process of removing applications from the Chromebook shelf, helping you customize your device to suit your specific needs.

The Chromebook shelf functions similarly to a taskbar or dock on other operating systems, providing quick access to your most frequently used applications. Over time, you may find that certain apps no longer deserve a prime spot on your shelf, or you might simply want to declutter your workspace. Fortunately, Chrome OS makes it incredibly easy to manage which applications appear on your shelf.

Understanding Shelf Management

Before we begin, it's important to understand what removing an app from the shelf actually means. When you remove an application from the shelf, you're simply unpinning it from that quick-access location. The application itself remains installed on your Chromebook and can still be accessed through the launcher or app drawer. This is a non-destructive process, so you don't need to worry about losing any data or having to reinstall applications.

Important Note: Google Play Store applications and Linux applications installed through the Linux (Beta) container will not be affected by this process unless they've been specifically pinned to your shelf. This guide focuses on managing shelf items, not uninstalling applications from your system.

How to Remove Applications from the Shelf

The process of removing applications from your Chromebook's shelf is straightforward and can be accomplished in just a few seconds:

  1. Locate the application you want to remove on your shelf (the bar at the bottom of your screen)
  2. Right-click on the application icon, or if you're using a touchscreen, press and hold the icon
  3. Select "Unpin" from the context menu that appears

That's all there is to it! The application will immediately be removed from your shelf. If you change your mind later, you can easily pin it back by opening the app from your launcher, right-clicking its icon on the shelf while it's running, and selecting "Pin."

Best Practices for Shelf Organization

Keeping your shelf organized can help you work more efficiently. Here are some tips to consider:

  • Keep it minimal: Only pin applications you use multiple times per day. This reduces visual clutter and makes it easier to find what you need.
  • Group similar apps: Chrome OS allows you to drag and rearrange shelf icons, so consider placing related applications next to each other.
  • Regular maintenance: Every few weeks, review your pinned applications and remove any that you're no longer using frequently.
  • Use the launcher: Remember that you can always access all your applications through the launcher (the circle icon on your shelf), so there's no need to pin everything.

Additional Tips

If you want to completely uninstall an application (not just remove it from the shelf), the process is different. For Chrome apps, you'll need to right-click the app in your launcher and select "Uninstall." For Android apps from the Play Store, you can uninstall them through the Play Store app or by right-clicking and selecting "Uninstall" from the launcher. Linux applications can be removed through your Linux terminal using the appropriate package manager commands.

You can also customize other aspects of your shelf by right-clicking on an empty area of the shelf itself. This allows you to change the shelf position (bottom, left, or right) and adjust its behavior, such as whether it auto-hides when not in use.
